She currently serves on the five-member African Union Panel of the Wise, representing West Africa, and is a Member of the Pan African Network of the Wise.
Dr. Chinery-Hesse has received several prestigious decorations both nationally and internationally, including Ghana’s highest National Award, the Order of the Star of Ghana, and a Laureate of the prestigious Gusi Peace Prize, the Asian equivalent of the Nobel Peace Prize.
Dr. Chinery-Hesse has held distinguished positions both within the United Nations system and Africa first, as Resident Coordinator of the United Nations System and Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and subsequently Deputy Director – General of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) in Geneva, with the rank of Under-Secretary –General of the United Nations. On retiring from the service of the United Nations, Dr. Mary Chinery-Hesse assumed the position of the Chief Advisor to the former President of Ghana, His Excellency John Agyekum Kufuor.
